L.P. Tredway

Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology & Extension Specialist

Lane Tredway is an assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University. Lane states, "My program focuses on important diseases of turfgrasses in golf courses, sod farms, landscapes, and athletic fields. The turfgrass industry is an important part of the economy in North Carolina, totaling nearly $2 billion in 1999. Turf is a valuable part of our society for aesthetic purposes, control of soil erosion, and surfaces for sports and leisure activities. Diseases caused by fungi and nematodes are some of the most severe problems that turfgrass managers face in North Carolina. With a 70% Extension and 30% Research appointment, my goal is to identify important disease problems in the turfgrass industry, develop practical solutions to these problems through research, and inform growers of these solutions through extension activities."

The new fungicides coming to the market today are safe and highly effective. But they are expensive and more narrow in their control spectrum. The author reviews recent research into whether weather data be used to predict disease development and accurately time fungicide applications. read more >>

Developing Effective Fungicide Programs for Spring Bermudagrass Dead Spot Control
Dec 1, 2003
By: L.P. Tredway, E.L. Butler

In many cases, cultural practices alone do not provide adequate control for spring dead spot. Fungicide applications are needed to prevent unacceptable turf damage. A year of field research yielded important preliminary results about the factors responsible for the erratic nature of spring dead spot control in bermudagrass. read more >>

Education

MS Plant Pathology - NC State University - December 2004
BS Agronomy/Turfgrass Management - NC State University - December 1998

Current Activities

Mr. Butler works with Dr. Lane Tredway in the Turfgrass Pathology program at NC State University. He primarily focuses on applied solutions to turfgrass disease management through their fungicide trials and research projects. Mr. ButlerŐs thesis focused on the control of spring dead spot of bermudagrass where he evaluated fungicides, application methods, and application timings as well as identifying the causal organism of spring dead spot in North Carolina. He continues to focus part of his time on spring dead spot where he is currently studying the epidemiology of spring dead spot while also conducting several spring dead spot fungicide trials in Raleigh, NC and Wilmington, NC.
